Our Approach
Step 1
When you sign up for one of our STAAR tutoring packages, the first thing we do is sit down with you and your child to learn about your tutoring needs, schedule, concerns, and your child’s academic problem areas. We do this through one-on-one interviews and practice problems to get an idea of the student’s academic strengths and weaknesses. This allows your new tutor to design a personalized study plan that will complement your child’s unique learning style.
Step 2
Next, we focus on practice problems and realistically simulated practice exams to help your child get comfortable with the testing format. We work with each student to minimize testing anxiety by showing them exactly what to expect on exam day and teaching them how to handle anything the STAAR can throw at them.
Step 3
Of course, succeeding on the STAAR takes more than just memorizing facts out of a book. That’s why we also focus on teaching your child proven study strategies to help them prepare. Our goal is to help set each student up for future success, not just help them cram for this next exam. Your new tutor with work with your child to make sure they learn the most effective study methods so they can be ready for all of the exams they’ll face in their future academics.
When the time comes for your child to start their STAAR test prep, some of the information we’ll need includes:
-
1What grade is your child in?
-
2What STAAR subjects do you need help with?
-
3How did your child perform in these subjects in school?
-
4Has your child taken any STAAR exams or STAAR practice exams before?
-
5If so, how did they score?
-
6Does your child need help with content or strategy (or both)?
-
7What are the best days/times to meet with your tutor?
-
8Do you prefer in-person or online tutoring?
New to STAAR prep? Here’s some information about the STAAR exams:
The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness tests are a collection of standardized tests administered in the state of Texas to students from grades 3-12. In high school, STAAR End Of Course (EOC) exams will be used to assess critical thinking and academic knowledge to determine whether each student is ready to graduate. At the end of each exam the student will receive one of three grades: Advanced Academic Performance (Highly prepared and ready to advance to the next grade), Satisfactory Academic Performance (Sufficiently prepared but not the best–still able to advance to the next grade), and Unsatisfactory Academic Performance (Insufficiently prepared for the next grade and does not advance).
The subject exam a student takes will depend on their grade level until they reach high school where the exam depends on their enrolled class. The STAARs are administered as follows:
