At Tutor the People, we understand how important your child’s education is. That’s why we pride ourselves on making sure our students actually understand the material, rather than just teaching to the test. We believe that by starting with the fundamentals and building onto more complex concepts, the student will be able to better retain the information. This way they will be able to apply their new knowledge in the classroom as well as on their exams.

We believe that personalized tutoring makes all the difference. Rather than focusing on generic lesson plans that rely on rote memorization, our tutors go the extra mile to get to know each of their students. This way we can create a customized Regents prep plan designed around your child’s unique academic strengths and weaknesses. No two students are alike, and that’s why we believe no two study plans should be either.

Our Approach

The first thing we do is learn about your tutoring needs, schedule, and your child’s experience with the Regents exams so we can match you with a tutor who best suits your child’s specific needs and learning style.

We pride ourselves on taking an individualized approach to our Regents tutoring. We know that “teaching to the test” may work in the short-term, but we go beyond that to ensure your child retains this new information and can apply it in their future studies. We will create a customized lesson plan designed specifically for each student to make the most of their Regents prep. This way they can take what they learn in tutoring and apply it in the classroom as well as on their exam.

Do you have multiple children preparing for the Regents exams? No problem! We offer group tutoring on an as-needed basis whenever you’re ready. Available both online and in-person, we do everything we can to match your busy lifestyle and your child’s personal learning needs.

When the time comes for your child to start their Regents test prep, some of the information we’ll need includes:

  • 1
Has your child started any Regents prep yet?
  • 2
Do you have any test dates scheduled?
  • 3
Has your child taken any Regents exams before?
  • 4
Have they taken a practice test?
  • 5
How did they score on each subject?
  • 6
What areas does your child struggle with?
  • 7
What areas are they strong in?
  • 8
What are your best days/times to meet with a tutor?
  • 9
Do you prefer in-person or online tutoring?

New to Regents prep? Here’s some information about the Regents exams:

The Regents exams are a New York state standardized test required by most public high schools. These exams are necessary for graduation and are most often taken in a student’s sophomore or junior year. Each exam is three hours long, except for the Earth Science exam which includes an additional lab component often performed in advance. The exams all include a wide variety of question types ranging from essays to open-ended to multiple choice.

There are two different types of Regents diplomas a student can receive, though both require scores of 65 or higher on all of their exams. The requirements are:

The Regents Diploma

  • English Language Arts
  • At least one math (Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II).
  • At least one science (Living Environment, Earth Science, Chemistry, or Physics)
  • At least one social studies (Global History or United States History and Government)
  • One additional Regents Exam in any subject

The Regents Diploma With Advanced Designation

  • English Language Arts
  • All three math regents (Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II)
  • Living Environment and 1 physical science regents (Earth Science, Chemistry, or Physics)
  • Global History or United States History and Government.

With Honors
It is also possible to obtain honors with either diploma. In order to do so the student must achieve an average score of at least 90 (without rounding), an average score of at least 85 on all required math exams, or an average score of at least 85 on at least three science exams.

Our goal is to help you understand the material, not just cram for a test.
