On The Test
The REG section of the CPA exam will be broken down in the following ways:
Ethics, Professional Responsibilities, and Federal Tax Procedures 10–20%
Business Law 10–20%
Federal Taxation of Property Transactions 12–22%
Federal Taxation of Individuals 15–25%
Federal Taxation of Entities 28–38%
The purpose of this section is to test the student’s knowledge of ethics and professional responsibility, business law, Federal tax procedures, and accounting issues, Federal taxation of property transactions, Federal taxation – individuals, and Federal taxation – entities. Essentially, this section of the exam focuses mostly on taxation and tax codes which means it will require quite a bit of memorization.
This test is often difficult to study for due to this reliance on memorization of a subject many consider to be quite dry. As explained by the AICPA, over 60% of this section is designed to focus on federal taxation and will do so by testing the student’s ability to apply their knowledge through simulations in addition to answering questions.
Like the other CPA sections, you will have 4 hours to complete the REG on a computer at the specified testing site. The REG portion will be broken up into 5 testlets (shown below) and the student must complete each testlet before submitting as you cannot go back to review. There is an optional 15-minute break after the third testlet that will stop the test timer. Each testlet is not individually timed, so it is up to the student to manage their time in order to finish every question.
The 5 testlets that make up the CPA REG section are:
- 38 Multiple-Choice Questions
- 38 Multiple-Choice Questions
- 2 Task-Based Simulations

More Info & Resources
What if I fail the REG sections?
You can retake the REG with no penalties as early as the next testing window. However, you will have to pay for another testing fee.
How much does it cost to take the REG?
The price will depend on the state you are taking the exam in, but it averages between $50-$200.

Is the REG difficult compared to the other sections?
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to whether or not this section will be difficult for you. The REG involves a lot of rote memorization of a very specific topic. That makes it difficult for some students to study for as it is easy to zone out during your test prep. However, if you have a talent for memorization or have experience as a tax accountant, then this section may end up being one of the easiest for you.
How many study hours should I have before I take the REG?
This depends on the student and their experience, though most experts agree that 100-200 hours are optimal. The exact amount of time is solely dependent on when you feel you are ready. For example, if you already have experience as a tax accountant, you probably don’t need as much time to study as somebody who recently graduated with their accounting degree.
How long do I have to finish all of the CPA sections?
After you complete the first test, you will have 18 months to finish the other three.
How soon can I take the next CPA sections?
You can take all four sections during the same testing window if you want. However, if you want to retake a section you will have to wait until the next testing window.
