What Is The CPA Ethics Exam?
Many people are familiar with the “4 E’s” when referring to the CPA exam, but not everybody knows that the fourth “E” actually stands for Ethics. In most states, this ethics exam is the last hurdle you will have to pass in order to join that elite society of licensed CPAs. It is available for you to take at any point during your CPA licensure journey, however it is heavily advised that you wait until after you pass the Uniform CPA. The Uniform CPA is so difficult and requires such intense study that it is better to dedicate all of your focus on that before trying to prepare for the completely different style of the CPA Ethics Exam.
Exam Format
The CPA Ethics Exam consists of 40-50 questions depending on your state and can be taken either online or on paper. It is designed to test your knowledge of the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct and Accounting Rules as well as assess how you would handle realistic ethical dilemmas you may encounter as a CPA.
While this test is often considered fairly easy (especially when compared to the Uniform CPA), don’t let the open-book format fool you! You need to get a 90 in order to pass which only leaves you room to miss around 4 questions. You will have three opportunities to take the CPA Ethics exam online. After that, you can still retake it, but you will have to take a paper version that the AICPA sends to you.
Do You Need The CPA Ethics Exam?
Every state has its own requirements regarding ethics exams, so make sure to check with your state accountancy board to verify what you need. Alternatively, check out NASBA’s Accountancy Licensing Library (ALL) for a more in-depth look at your state requirements.
