On The Test
The BEC section of the CPA exam is going to be broken down in the following ways:
Corporate Governance 17–27%
Economic Concepts and Analysis 17–27%
Financial Management 11–21%
Information Technology 15–25%
Operations Management 15–25%
The purpose of this section is the test the student’s knowledge of business structures, economic concepts, financial management, information technology, and planning and measurement. Like the other sections, the BEC will include multiple-choice style questions as well as simulations. However, the BEC also contains the only written communication section of the CPA exam. The written communication simulation is meant to test the student’s ability to use standard business English, present supporting evidence, and organize ideas.
Format
The BEC will be broken up into 5 testlets (shown below), and you will have 4 hours to complete the exam. The exam will be administered on a computer at a specified testing center. There will be an optional 15-minute break between the 3rd and 4th testlet which will stop the exam timer if taken. Each testlet must be fully completed before you move on to the next. Once you move on to the next testlet you will be unable to go back to review the previous ones. Each testlet is not individually timed, so it is up to the student to manage their own time in order to answer every question.
The 5 testlets that make up the CPA BEC section are:
- 31 Multiple-Choice Questions
- 31 Multiple-Choice Questions
- 2 Task-Based Simulations
