What Are Your Goals This Summer?

Practice

Spending your summer studying may not sound ideal, but taking just a couple days out of your week to focus on academics can be a complete game-changer when the new term starts. Experts say that students are losing 20-30% of the information they’ve gained over the past school year when they don’t actively practice these skills over the summer. This can make it a lot more difficult to keep up when the new school year and classes begin. By reviewing the key concepts that they’ve learned, students are able to keep the material fresh while gaining mastery over the material.

Stay One Step Ahead

If you plan on taking an AP or Honors class sometime during the next school year, it pays to make sure that you are as ready as possible. These classes are not easy (in fact they are designed to push and test you in many ways) but you can get ahead by taking some time over the summer to prepare. Working on your study skills, reading comprehension, and even the material you will be covering in the coming class are great ways to ensure that you’ll be ready for anything that class can throw at you.

Test Prep

This is especially important for middle school and high school students as you’ll be facing a lot of standardized tests that can majorly impact your academic future. By beginning your test prep in the summer, you can make sure that you have plenty of time to dedicate to your studies. This way you won’t be forced to sacrifice any of your homework time to focus on test prep (or vice versa). Tests like the SAT and ACT can have a huge impact on your college and scholarship opportunities, so you need to make sure you’re giving yourself as much time as possible to prepare for them.
